TRANSCRIPT OF THE ABOVE VIDEO: 'Recommended Books For English Learners - Charlotte’s Web - Improve Your English With Books & Films'
Hi everyone, it's Nicole here and I'd like to recommend a book, so that you have something to read. There are so many amazing books out there and all of them will help you improve your English reading skills, your comprehension, your overall understanding of vocabulary and expressions, and they'll help you become exposed to great grammar, so you know, there's no reason not to read, it’s something enjoyable, but if you can find a book that you really enjoy and that you want to finish from cover to cover, well, you know what, there's a lot out there, but I thought that I'd start recommending some books to you, some books that I think are great for English language learners.
And the first book that I recommend is a book called Charlotte's Web, Charlotte's Web.
So, Charlotte is the name of a spider, and web is obviously the spider web that she makes.
So, this book is about Charlotte and her web, but actually it's a book about a pig who lives on a farm, obviously, and becomes friends with this spider named Charlotte, and Charlotte really takes a liking to this pig and knows that the farmer will eventually kill the pig and eat the pig, and she doesn't want that to happen. So, Charlotte comes up with a plan to save the pig, to make sure that the pig is celebrated, instead of eaten I suppose.
So, she comes up with a plan to save him, and what she does is she adds some words to her spider web, so she creates a spider web, and adds the words "some pig”. And then the next day, when the pig is standing underneath the spider web, the farmer, his family, the whole town, see these incredible words and the pig under underneath, and think ‘Wow, this pig must be really special even the spider thinks so.’
So, it continues and continues and Charlotte always creates new words about the pig, and about how amazing the pig is. So, obviously, what happens, the pig is allowed to live, the pig becomes a hero, the pig becomes really special, I suppose, and quite famous. The pig goes off to enter different shows and competitions, and everybody wants to see this pig who is really special. So, the spider has saved the pig and has become really good friends.
It's a really, really beautiful story, it was written for children, however it is for all ages, it is just as much loved by children as it is by adults, you know, adults love this story, many people grow up reading this book. Here in Australia, students even study this book, this book, in literature class at school when they're learning literature. So, yeah, many many, or almost all native speakers have read this book, or heard about this book, and know the story because it's so, so lovely.
So, I'd like you to read it as well. It's called Charlotte's Web, and as I said, it's really beautiful, it's heartwarming. The language used is quite simple, so it's easy for you to understand, there's lots of beautiful descriptions, you'll learn lots of new words which is great, but more importantly, the story is so beautiful, and warm, and inspiring that you'll just want to continue reading more, and more, and more.
The bonus is that there's also a movie, there's a cartoon, an animated version called Charlotte's Web, obviously, but there's also a movie with a famous actress, I can't remember her name right now, but there’s a movie as well, if you'd like to watch it, it's only maybe 10 years old or so. So, watch the movie as well Charlotte's Web.
Maybe read the book first, then watch the movie or watch the cartoon, and then read it again, but enjoy, it's a beautiful book. It's not too long, but as I said, it's entertaining and it will keep you wanting to read more. Charlotte's Web.
I hope you've enjoyed that recommendation, and I hope that you really enjoy reading that book. Have a wonderful day everyone and happy reading. Bye.
How was the video? Did you enjoy hearing all about the farmyard adventures? Do you think this would be the type of book (or movie) that you'd enjoy? I am certain that once you start you will be completely absorbed by the beautiful story of Wilbur, Charlotte and their friends, and you won't be able to put the book down (or turn the movie off).
Let me summarise the main story for you again:
-This is the story of Wilbur the pig, and Charlotte the spider who have a very special friendship. Charlotte looks out for Wilbur and prevents him from landing on the dinner plate, thereby making him the most famous and special pig in the local area. This is the story of friendship, of love, of trust, and of adventure, it is a feel-good story for all ages which will bring a tear to your eye and a smile to your face.
What a beautiful story - do yourself a favour, get a copy of the book Charlotte's Web and read it (then when you are done, watch the movie to see how much you understood - what a good - and enjoyable - exercise!)
