TRANSCRIPT OF THE ABOVE VIDEO: Alternative Ways to Say ‘Big' in English - Improve Your Natural English Speaking Skills
Hi everyone. Its Nicole here, from Sydney English Teacher, and from The Successful English Learner by Sydney English Teacher, and I'm back answering another one of your questions.
Someone recently asked me, ‘Nicole, what is another way of saying the word big?’ That's a really good question, you know, we don't have to just say big all the time. There are so many alternatives for this word. So, I thought that I would share a few of them with you, so that you become more confident in using these alternatives, these synonyms, and so that you have a few other options.
So, first of all, there are two sort of sides to big. We can talk about big as in the size of something, but we can also talk about big as in the importance of something.
So, first of all, let me give you some synonyms for big with the meaning of size. Are you ready? So, obviously big. Then, we could also say large, or we could say huge, have you heard of that? Huge. We also have the option to say sizeable, sizeable, so something that's really big is sizeable. We could say great, great there is talking about size. Enormous, that's a great one, we use that all the time, enormous. Something could be massive, meaning very big. Gigantic, very, very, very big. Jumbo, again, very, very, very big. Mega is another great way to express something that's very big. Ginormous. Have you heard of that? Similar to enormous but even bigger, ginormous. We could say humungous, that's another great word to express that something's very big. Or, considerable, I suppose that's a little bit more academic, a little bit more formal. We could say something is giant, that's an easy one to remember. Grand. Maybe something can be immense, meaning very large, very big. Or, even substantial.
So, all of those words are alternatives for when we are talking about big, meaning the size of something.
Now let's have a talk about some alternatives for the word big when we're talking about importance, to show that something is very big, very important. Are you ready?
So, we could obviously use the word important, but we could also say significant. Or major, major, have you heard that before? Major. Momentous is another great one there, meaning that it's big, it's important. Vital, great word there, something's really important, it's vital, it's big. It's critical. Or, crucial is another word there, we could say. We could even say something is serious, it's really big and important, it's serious. Or, it's paramount that’s something a bit more advanced, I suppose, and something that I taught in Nicole’s Weekly Words, if you remember.
So, there you go. They’re a few alternatives for the word big or very big, when we're talking about size and importance. I hope that really helps and please start using some of them. They're great. Have a great day. Bye everyone.
